Windows 3.1

The first mainstream graphical OS on IBM PCs (over 25 million copies in 2 years). 16-bit shell running on top of MS-DOS, Program Manager, File Manager, Solitaire, Minesweeper. Emulated in-browser via Internet Archive Emularity (DOSBox + full Win 3.1 disk image).

Windows 3.1 — Full installation — boots to Program Manager. Loading takes 15-30s (Win 3.1 image is larger than most)

11 classic Win 3.1 games + Windows 95 bonus

Individual games boot faster than the full Win 3.1 install (they include only the Win 3.1 runtime needed). Windows 95 bonus at the end — takes ~1 minute to boot but works.

How to use
  1. Wait for boot (15-30s). You will see the classic Program Manager.
  2. Double-click any group icon (Main, Accessories, Games) to open it.
  3. Try classics: Solitaire (Games), Notepad (Accessories), File Manager (Main).
  4. To exit Windows: Program Manager → File → Exit Windows → returns to DOS prompt.
Fun facts
  • Solitaire (Klondike) was added by Microsoft in Windows 3.0 to teach users to drag & drop with a mouse.
  • Minesweeper was designed to teach right-click — a novel gesture in 1992.
  • Chip's Challenge is a port from an obscure Atari Lynx game; its Win 3.1 version made it famous.
  • Windows 3.1 was the first Microsoft OS to include TrueType fonts.
